Do you find yourself sometimes struggling with the same challenges over and over?
You hit an obstacle in building your business, career or growing personally the way you would like. I remember discussing with one of my mentors all the things I wanted to do. Look after my family financially, grow my career, build my own startup, travel, etc. Jamie stopped me and said you know what your problem is, “you lack focus. You need to stick to one thing and everything else will fall into place.” To be honest, I was a little-taken back.
It has taken me a few years to apply that and take it from a discipline to a habit. I like to always have a few things on the go. I’d experience success in the past, but it wasn’t until I hit a wall that I began to work on connecting my results with my approach. In the last decade, I had a successful career making a six-figure income, dream home, great marriage(so I thought), and three charming boys. I was on top of the world. But all of the sudden, within less than a year, things weren’t working out. For all the dedication and hard work, my life was in turmoil and it felt as if everything was crumbling around me.
I was failing.
At the end of a short rope that at times felt more like a noose, I sought help and found it in the form of a mentor. I would walk through my issues, challenges and goals both personally and professionally.
Our discussion started with a simple question: “Do you know what you need to do to turn things around?” I hadn’t a clue.
At the time, I wanted to do my own startup and began to explain my plan for that. He explained what it would take and the changes he believed I needed to make that work. I was shocked and told him it would probably take more than that.
It was a transformational moment. What became so obvious is that, as focused as I thought I was, I wasn’t focused enough. So based on this meeting, I made a huge decision. I decided to put the startup idea aside and pursue finding consistent income as my singular focus.
Within three years, I have been able to see potential success again and I have never looked back.
Most recently, I have been inspired by the teaching of authors Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. Their book, “The ONE Thing” demonstrate that the results you get are directly influenced by the way you work and the choices you make. You’ll learn how to identify the lies that block your success and the thieves that steal time from your day. By focusing on your ONE Thing, you can accomplish more by doing less and achieve extraordinary results.
